Don't Call Us CHINESE Anymore !!!
Will you call Bill Clinton an Irish man? Will you call Nicolas Sarkozy a Hungarian? Or do you think Barack Obama should go to Kenya to run for president there? The answer is a simple and absolute "NO".
Most people in Taiwan, whose ancestors came from China, use Chinese languages including Holo, Hakka, Manderin and don't deny that there are Chinese cultural impacts in our daily life. But that should not do anything to our nationality and self-identity. There are two "central" goverments governing two separate groups of people on two separate sets of lands, which is an important indication of separate sovereignty. Furthermore, by the hard works of countless founders of democracy on this island country, Taiwan has been on the right track toward a free society, just like many advanced countries in the world. And we in Taiwan have been enjoying steadily growing economy and blossomy democracy for dozens of years. We don't want to go back to Chiang Kai-shek's iron curtain or live under Chinese Communist dictatorship. Unfortunately, the incumbent KMT government is pushing for a fast-moving pro-China and pro-Communist policy which most Taiwanese people think is unproper or even dangerous. Should this island fall into Communist hands, it will surely be a terrible tragedy for free and civilized world. However, we still have chances to reverse that. The Japanese government has been studying an amendment to its "Law of Foreigners' Nationality Registry" for some time. According to current provisions, nationality of Taiwanese living in Japan is registered as "China" instead of "Taiwan". So some pro-Taiwan civil groups in Japan initiated series of petitions both in written form and on internet. They want their government to change the way officials register Taiwanese's nationality --- from CHINA to TAIWAN. We, as people proud to be Taiwanese, don't expect a dramatic change of the foreign policy of Japanese goverment in a short time, but we want to send a message to people around the world, no matter friendly to Taiwan or not, that we should be called and treated as Taiwanese, not Chinese. We strongly believe that we deserve a name we really want. If you are with us, please show your support of our cause by your signature. This process will cost you less than five minutes. http://www.shomei.tv/project-670.html
Please directly visit the webpage if you can read Japanese proficiently. If not, here is a well-prepared step-by-step guide. The page will show you some data about the internet petition. Please see middle of this page.

There are three blanks here.
If you don't want your name to be shown, please choose the second blank, the one before "表示を匿名にする" which means you will sign the petition anonymously. If you don't mind showing your name publicly, you can choose the third blank and type your name or nickname in the first blank. After that, please click the button named "今すぐ署名する" --- which means "sign immediately" --- and go to next page.
You will see seven blanks where you have to fill in something. There will be red "必須" --- which means "must" or "have to" --- in front of those blanks.

1. Fill in your name or nickname. Actually your name will be shown automatically if you fill in your name on previous page. Of course you can change your signed name here or choose to be anonymous.

2. Fill in your e-mail address. The most important is that this address should be where you can receive vital information. Because you will have to open a letter sent by the petition site and click a link to finish your signature.

3. Fill in your post number. There should be seven numerics in Japan. But since it's very likely that you don't live in Japan, please fill in seven "zeros".

4. Choose a prefecture where you are living in. When you are not in Japan, you are recommended to choose "海外" --- on the bottom of this list --- which means "overseas" or "out of the country".

5. Fill in name of the city or town where you are living in, for example, NY, London....etc.

6. Fill in name of the region where you are living in. You are recommended to fill in name of the country you are living in, for example, USA, UK, Canada....etc.

7. Complete this page. The blank below "コメント" --- which means "comment" --- is where you can write some opinions. You can ignore this if you don't want or you are too busy to write something. Then press the button "確認画面に進む" --- which means "go to next page".

Make sure if the data you fill in are correct or not. If all correct, fill in the "password number" and click the button "この内容で署名する" --- which means "complete my signature with these data".

There are two sentences here which means "your signature is already sent to the website but the whole process is not finished yet".

Meanwhile, a letter is sent by "noreply@shomei.tv" to your e-mail box. Please open it and you will see three links in the main article like this.

Click the middle one marked by red frame and you will see this page in the browser.
This message means the whole process is already finished.
